Scallop: A Leisure Chair Inspired by Nature

A Unique and Elegant Design by Wei Jingye and Li Jiashu

The Scallop chair takes inspiration from the graceful shape of the scallop shell, resulting in a stunning and comfortable leisure chair. With its curved seat surface and backrest, the Scallop chair is designed to perfectly fit the human body, providing both style and comfort. The fluidity of marine organisms is reflected in the bending of the chair's legs, creating a beautiful and organic form. Made primarily from stainless steel, the Scallop chair is not only aesthetically pleasing but also durable, making it suitable for a wide range of environments.

The Scallop chair stands out from other designs with its unique and innovative features. The chair's overall design is inspired by the flexible shape of the scallop shell, resulting in an elegant and eye-catching form. The arc-shaped seat surface and backrest, made from stainless steel plate, are seamlessly welded to create a smooth and comfortable seating experience. The chair's legs, crafted from stainless steel wire, are bent using a hot bending process, adding to the chair's fluid and organic appearance. The surface treatment of the chair features an imitation copper corrosion process, giving it a distinct and sophisticated look. To enhance comfort, the Scallop chair is complemented with leather armrests and cushions, providing a luxurious seating experience.

The realization of the Scallop chair involves the use of stainless steel plate and wire rod. The stainless steel plate is either stamped or bent to form the chair's seat surface and backrest. Laser drilling is employed on the backrest to reduce the weight of the furniture without compromising its structural integrity. The legs and handrails of the chair are made from stainless steel wire, which is hot bent to achieve the desired shape. The stainless steel plate and wire are then welded together, ensuring the chair's stability and support. The chair is completed with hand-sewn leather armrests and cushions, adding a touch of elegance and comfort.

Measuring at 760mm x 780mm x 830mm, the Scallop chair is designed with meticulous attention to detail. The seat surface and backrest are made from corrosion-treated stainless steel plate, which undergoes either stamping or bending processes. Laser drilling on the backrest reduces the weight of the chair, making it more lightweight and versatile. The legs and handrails, made from stainless steel wire, are hot bent to achieve their graceful curves. The combination of stainless steel and leather creates a harmonious blend of materials, resulting in a chair that is both visually appealing and comfortable to use.

The Scallop chair is designed to be versatile and adaptable to various environments. Its ergonomic design makes it suitable for leisure activities such as reading or enjoying a cup of tea. It can also be used in office settings, providing a stylish and comfortable seating option. The chair's weather resistance and stable color make it suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Its simple and elegant shape allows it to seamlessly integrate into various environmental styles, adding a touch of sophistication wherever it is placed.

The Scallop chair project began in March 2021 in Shenyang and was completed in June 2021. It was displayed at the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in Shenyang in the same month. The design process involved extensive research on the scallop shell and its unique shape. The designers aimed to capture the essence of the scallop's fluidity and elegance in their chair design, resulting in a truly remarkable piece of furniture.

The Scallop chair has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and professional excellence. The Scallop chair's integration of industry best practices and its ability to provide both functionality and aesthetic appeal contribute to its well-deserved recognition.
